The Technology
What is Vacuum Impregnation?
Sealing Porosity — Without Affecting the Casting
Porosity is a natural phenomenon in metal castings — voids and leak paths form within the wall thickness of the casting as metal transitions from liquid to solid state. These internal defects cause castings to fail pressure tests, resulting in leakage of air, gases, or fluids in service. Vacuum impregnation is a proven OEM process that seals these internal leak paths by introducing a sealant into the voids under vacuum and pressure — making the casting completely leak-free without affecting its dimensions, mechanical properties, or surface finish. Castings that would otherwise be scrapped are fully recovered and made fit for use.
The Process
4-Step Impregnation Process
Step 1 — Impregnation
Vacuum & Pressure Fill
The chamber is sealed and vacuum is drawn — removing air from all porosity and leak paths. Sealant is then introduced under positive pressure, filling every void within the casting wall.
Step 2 — Drain
Excess Sealant Recovery
Excess sealant is removed from the casting surface through gravity, rotation, or centrifugal force — recovering unused sealant for reuse.
Step 3 — Wash
Rinse & Clean
Residual sealant is washed from internal passages, taps, pockets, and external features — leaving the casting dimensionally clean and ready for use.
Step 4 — Cure
Sealant Cure
The casting is passed through a cure station where the sealant polymerises within the porosity — forming a permanent, pressure-tight seal that lasts the life of the component.
Key Benefits
Why Vacuum Impregnation
Recover Rejected Castings
Castings failing pressure tests can be fully recovered — dramatically reducing scrap rates and saving casting and machining costs.
No Dimensional Change
The process seals internal voids only — no change to casting dimensions, surface finish, mechanical properties, or machinability.
Improves Surface Treatment
Sealed castings accept surface treatments — plating, painting, anodising — more uniformly, improving finish quality and corrosion resistance.
Permanent Seal
Once cured, the sealant is tough, flexible, heat resistant, and permanent — outlasting the service life of the component.
